Admission Policy

Guangzhou Nanhu International School is dedicated to the task of providing an environment conducive to the academic growth of students and to the fostering of future citizens of strong character, pride, and respect for their self, school, community and nation. Admission to and continuance in the school is to be regarded as a privilege and not a right. Only through the rigorous selection of potential students and the implementation of high standards can the school obtain the satisfactory achievement of the academic and social goals which it offers the community. As a private institution Guangzhou Nanhu International School reserves its right to admit students based on this policy.

Acceptance for admission implies that:
Parents and guardians accept the conditions of the agreement stated on the Application Form for Admission. At the time of enrolment and throughout the academic year, the student is to be of good moral character, amenable to discipline, and free from habits such as the use of illegal drugs, improper and scandalous behaviour in the community, disregard for social and legal regulations which creates a negative image of the school and its student body.
The student is involved in school activities and complies with its regulations, discipline, and traditions.

Other admission criteria:
Three factors are considered as a frame of reference for the acceptance of new students:
1. Affiliation or bonds with the Guangzhou expatriate community.
2. The "Educational Need" of the candidate regarding learning in English.
3. The commitment of the candidate and his/her family to the type of education offered at GNIS.
There are other indicators of educational needs: Children who arrive in China with no English, children who come from other bilingual schools. If the parents speak English, it is considered also as an indicator of success in the demanding program of the school. Parents are considered a fundamental factor in the education of their children, and consideration will be given to those families who have demonstrated their support for the school and its goals. The final enrolment decision is at the discretion of the Principal as authorised by the Board of Directors.

Any student whose academic progress and/or conduct in or out of school is not satisfactory and hence, is detrimental to the welfare of the total student population and the well-being of the institution may find his/her enrolment at risk of being cancelled . The responsibility to determine the refusal for readmission of any student is delegated by the Board of Directors to the Principal and Operations Manager of the school. The parents of the student shall be notified at the time such action is considered as possible and the final decision shall be communicated to them in writing.

All students enrolled at Guangzhou Nanhu International School must fulfil the objectives and skills required in each grade. In the few cases where students do not meet these requirements and if considered in the best interests of the child the school and the parents may consider the possibility of having the child repeat the year at GNIS.

Enrolment Procedure
An enrolment application must be submitted and prospective students and parents will have an interview with the principal.
For Years 1 through 12, an entrance examination is administered in order to determine mastery of the English language and academic preparation. This will enable the school to determine the class most suited to the student.
All applicants should be evaluated in the following areas, depending on their age and entrance grade:
Year 1 and Year 2: A readiness test of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills. English/reading will be one criterion for admission to first grade.
Years 3-13: An English oral and written test, a reading comprehension test in English, and Maths test in English.
To help determine acceptance of enrolment parents are encouraged to submit as much information as possible including:
Transcripts English from school previously attended.
Three letters of recommendation, preferably from members of the school community.
Bank reference.
Copy of the passport statistics and China Visa Stamp for the student and parents.
Medical report from Health Care Center of Guangdong Int'l Travel ( 207 Longkou Xi Rd , Tianhe, GZ);.
Copy of Registration Form of Temporary Residence For Visitors” from your local Chinese Public Security Station.

Deposit for the new enrolments and Current Students
Deposit fee for the new enrolments
If you are enrolling more than 3 weeks before the starting date, we require a deposit of one month's fee before confirmation will be provided. This deposit is credited to the first fee invoice after your child commences school. If your child does not commence school the deposit is non-refundable.
Deposit fee for Current Students
A resource fee-including textbook fee, stationary and other materials fee applies each year in early May. This is to confirm placement for the next school year and is non-refundable but will be deducted from the first semester bill.

Class size
Pre-Nursery&Nursery : No more than 18 students per section.
For Nursery the child should be three years of age by August 31st of the year she/he is applying to enter school. Children shall be at least 2.5 years of age when entering Pre-Nursery. Minimum age for entering Pre-Nursery shall be 2.5 at the time of entrance in August.

Reception :No more than 18 students per section. (The maximum number would be 18 students per section, following the above policy).

Yea rs 1- 13 :20 students per section.
